About this Event
Unbannable Library (Washington Square Park)
This is a free event, but registration is required.
comes to Washington Square as a vibrant public art installation celebrating the freedom to read. Created through collaborations between community groups, high schools, and artist/writer teams, these unique larger-than-life interactive books draw attention to the voices and stories most often subject to censorship. Visitors are invited to turn the giant pages, encounter new works of art and writing, and reflect on the importance of intellectual freedom in our libraries and communities.
Begun in 2023, the Unbannable Library now includes more than forty monumental books that stand together as a powerful statement against censorship and a celebration of the rich and varied voices of our community.
Taking place alongside the installation, the Indie Lit Fair will bring together independent presses and literary magazines for a lively outdoor celebration of small-press publishing..
The 2026 PEN World Voices Festival is a celebration of world literature and free expression. The 2026 edition will be the 21st World Voices Festival.
