The series kicks off with a panel at the legendary queer nightclub The Stud in San Francisco. The Midwest Queer Underground features Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, the Godmother of Detroit House Music and a queer icon with four decades behind the decks, alongside The Blessed Madonna, whose Midwest rave roots propelled her to international prominence.
The conversation will be hosted by 48 Hills editor and Stud Collective member Marke B (Detroit ex-pat).
Together, these voices explore how Midwest queer communities built lasting global connections, sharing lived experiences and stories passed down by rave elders who laid the foundation for today’s dance-music culture.

Dr. Time — Biography
Dr. Time (formerly Justime) has been producing events and DJing in the SF Bay Area for over a decade. Recently relocated to Palm Springs, he is one-third of the DJ collective DRY HEAT. For more than ten years, Dr. Time has brought intentional, dance-floor-driven energy to underground spaces across California.
The Baptist (SF) — Biography
The Baptist is religious to the dance floor, blending genre fluidity with trans femininity. Joan (she/her) is a producer, DJ, and raver at heart. Faithful to the scene for the better part of a decade, she devotes her time to making bleep-bloops, digging through digital crates, and investing sweat and care into the Bay Area underground.
As a DJ, Joan seeks to share euphoric waves while creating moments of deep introspection. The Baptist keeps things playful (often humorous) while spinning with emotional intentionality and optimism. Every set is a communion—equal parts sweat, spirit, and sound. She will deliver you.
Religious to no single electronic genre, Joan’s sound draws from Acid House, Progressive House, Breaks, Trance, and Techno. You can hear @thebaptist.mp3’s personal mixes on SoundCloud, with features from Honcho, Double Virgo, SutroFM’s Nascent Attraction, Spontaneous Affinity, Massive, Daisychain, and HydeFM.
Her time on dance floors has led her to believe that while the DJ is a powerful curator, the dance-floor congregation is equally sacred as the music that binds them—preaching to the choir, if you will.
