On our "Jackfruit Town" Heritage Walk, the journey begins in a manner befitting the rhythms of everyday life in this historic quarter — with a sumptuous and authentic Tamil-style vegetarian breakfast, served as it has been for generations.
Refreshed, we step into the sacred landscape of the town and visit two ancient and distinctive temples, each revealing layers of local faith, craftsmanship and community memory that have quietly shaped this neighbourhood over centuries.
From the stillness of the shrines, we move into the lively heart of the settlement — the traditional bazaar street. Here, amid familiar calls of traders and the gentle bustle of daily commerce, we pause to savour a beloved local sweetmeat, an enduring taste of the town’s culinary heritage.
The walk then unfolds through a series of old residences, a historic church and several surviving structures from a bygone era, offering glimpses into the architectural language and social life of a period when this town stood at the crossroads of culture, trade and belief.
Our journey concludes at a remarkable heritage home, today reborn as an ashram and a school, and now home to the town’s most vibrant and contemporary art space
