Marichka Chichkova is a Ukrainian musician, singer, and composer with over 15 years of experience researching and performing traditional music. She is a former member of the bands Torban, Slavalachia, Dryg, and Olenky, and is currently developing her solo project RICHKA.Marichka is the head of the NGO “Local Cultural Support,” founder of Fête de la Musique Lviv, and director of the chamber venue Nyzhnyj Zal at the Puppet Theatre in Lviv. She is also a lecturer at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and actively engaged in numerous cultural initiatives.
Her artistic journey is rooted in long-term study of traditional singing. She trained at the Rys Traditional Music School and participated in workshops with Uliana Horbachevska, Hanna Okhrimchuk, Susana Karpenko, Yevhen Yefremov, Hanna Koropnichenko, and learned directly from tradition bearers such as Drevo from Kryachkivka, Domenika Chekun, and Oleksiy Zayets. She also conducted her own field expeditions in the Boyko region.
In recent years, Marichka has deepened her practice through Complete Vocal Institute studies (Complete Vocal Technique) and vocal circle practices.
She does not “teach how to sing” in a conventional sense. Instead, she guides people toward discovering and developing their own natural, comfortable voice. Singing is learned through singing; she helps make that path clearer and more supportive.
Her main focus is group work, where participants learn not only from her but from one another. She values community, shared creativity, and cultural continuity. Private lessons are also available upon request.
This workshop will be dedicated to traditional spring ritual songs, exploring the specific vocal sound and breathing patterns characteristic of these seasonal chants.
We will work with songs from the regions of Halychyna (Galicia) and Polissia, focusing on their distinctive timbre, open resonance, collective energy, and the grounded, natural breath that supports this repertoire.
Participants will not only learn the melodies, but also experience how sound, breath, and ritual context shape the unique vocal quality of these traditions.
Price: 40 eur for 2 day workshop
