Come learn a centuries-old craft found throughout Eastern Europe! While Ukrainian eggs (pysanky) are traditionally associated with Easter, the art form lends itself well to Christmas as well. Ukrainian eggs, or pysanky, are created using a wax batik method. We’ll examine traditional design elements, what the colors symbolize, and some of the stories associated with the eggs. During this class, you will learn to use a kistka (tiny funnel on a stick) to draw with melted wax on egg shells. Once you’ve drawn the initial design, you dye the egg in a light color, add more wax, and dye again in the next color. Once all the dyeing is complete, you melt off the wax to reveal your colorful design.
