About this Event
Welcome to our pysanky making workshop! Join us to learn the art of creating beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs. This event is organized by the Ukrainian community in Madison area and Friends of Ukraine - Madison, a local non-profit organization.
Pysanky is a traditional Ukrainian folk art that has been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. The name "pysanky" comes from the Ukrainian word "pysaty," meaning "to write."In this workshop, you will learn the process of creating pysanky from start to finish. We will begin by learning about the symbolism behind the colors and designs used in pysanky, and how they relate to Ukrainian culture and folklore. During the workshop, you will learn how to use a special tool called a kistka to apply hot beeswax onto the eggshell in a pattern. Then, you will use a series of dye baths to color the eggshell in a specific order, adding more wax between each color to create a layered design. Finally, you will learn how to remove the wax to reveal your beautiful, one-of-a-kind pysanka. No prior experience is necessary for this workshop, and all materials will be provided. You will leave the workshop with a completed pysanky and the skills and knowledge to create more on your own. It's a great opportunity to connect with Ukrainian culture and create something beautiful in the process. We hope to see you there!
There is a fee of $45 that covers all workshop supplies (egg, coloring and paining tools, handouts, and Ukrainian traditional pastries, sweets & tea). Participation of children (10+ years old) is $30. Registration fees and larger donations would be gratefully accepted. All proceeds go to support cultural mission and future events organized by Friends of Ukraine - Madison.
