🎉 Ukraine on Film marks its 10th edition in Brussels!!!📍From 6 to 10 May, the 10th edition of Ukraine on Film will take place at Cinema Galeries in Brussels. Established in 2016 in response to Russia’s war against Ukraine, the festival has spent a decade bringing Ukrainian cinema to audiences in the heart of the European Union, offering insight into the country’s culture, society, and contemporary realities.
Marking its tenth anniversary, this year’s edition reflects both the growing international recognition of Ukrainian cinema and its continued urgency in wartime. The programme presents a selection of recent documentary and fiction films by leading Ukrainian filmmakers, including works showcased at major international festivals.
🤝 The festival is organised by Arthouse Traffic, the Association of Ukrainians in Belgium, and the Ukrainian State Film Agency, with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Belgium, the Mission of Ukraine to the European Union, and Cinema Galeries.
This year’s programme brings together five films exploring different dimensions of the Ukrainian experience:
🎥 My Dear Théo — directed by Alisa Kovalenko
A documentary by a Ukrainian volunteer soldier, filmmaker, and mother, combining frontline reality with intimate reflections addressed to her young son. The film was nominated for the DOX:AWARD at CPH:DOX and selected for Docudays UA.
🎥 Traces — directed by Alisa Kovalenko and Marysia Nikitiuk
A documentary focusing on Ukrainian women survivors of sexual violence during the war, whose testimonies challenge stigma and silence. The film received the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Documentary Award at Movies that Matter.
🎥 To the Victory! — directed by Valentyn Vasyanovych
A fiction film set in post-war Ukraine, portraying a filmmaker who remains in the country while his family builds a new life abroad. The film was selected for the Toronto International Film Festival.
🎥 Militantropos — directed by Yelizaveta Smith, Alina Gorlova and Simon Mozghovyi
A documentary exploring the human condition shaped by war, bringing together stories of those who flee, those who lose everything, and those who stay to resist. The film premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival and was later presented in the IDFA Best of Fests programme.
🎥 Second Wind — directed by Mariya Kondakova
A documentary following Ukrainian veterans with amputations as they climb Mount Kilimanjaro, tracing a journey of resilience and physical and emotional recovery.
