About this Event
An event for the young (and young at heart) to explore the teaching workshops at MechSpace - UCL's award-winning Mechanical Engineering workshop. The workshop will be open for visitors to discover more about the fascinating world of engineering design and will give children a chance to design, build, and test their own creations.
Making activities include:
- Design and fly a model aeroplane
- Make your own gas-powered racing car
- Build and program a rescue robot
- Drive in a simulator
- See (and touch!) real rockets, submarines, helicopters, racing cars, robots, and more
- Use a 3D printer
- Try a Virtual Reality headset
- Engrave your own Young MechSpace Member badge to remember the day
- And more...
Some activities have limited capacity and require timed bookings (see below).
MechSpace is the teaching workshop for UCL Mechanical Engineering where undergraduate and graduate students learn practical engineering skills and build competition vehicles including racing cars, drones, rockets, mars rovers, submarines, and ultra-efficient vehicles. More information is available at: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/mechanical-engineering/about/facilities/mechspace
All under 18-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times when in the building. MechSpace in an engineering workshop environment: areas not used for Family and Friends activities are strictly out of bounds.
ACTIVITIES REQUIRING SEPARATE BOOKINGS
Make and Race Your Own Gas-Powered Racing Car
Design, decorate, and assemble a miniature Formula 1 car with spinning wheels and aerodynamic features. Test your creation on our gas-powered time trial track and see your car reach speeds of up to 50mph!
Suggested age: 5+ with supervision. Approximate time: 30-60min. Limited number of spaces available.
Build and Program a Rescue Robot
Use Lego Mindstorms to create a robot that can walk or drive around an obstacle course using a remote control. Use sensors and an easy-to-learn programming language to drive your robot all by itself!
Suggested age: 5+ with supervision. Approximate time: 30-60min. Limited number of spaces available.
Design and Fly a Model Aeroplane
Learn about lift, drag, and how aerofoils allow a plane to fly. There will be a chance to fly a model aeroplane and also build your own rubber-powered design with a spinning propeller.
Suggested age: 8+ with supervision. Approximate time: 30-60min. Limited number of spaces available.
