About this Event
Join Helen Thompson, Professor of Political Economy in the Department of Politics and International Studies at Cambridge University, for a Barbara Weinstock Lecture on the Moral Economy of Resource Extraction and the Future of Industrialization.
Helen Thompson explores the geopolitical and ecological stakes of the so-called energy transition, arguing that it is less about shifting away from resource extraction and more a transformation in what is being extracted. From the Spanish Empire’s resource-driven economy to China’s modern dominance in metal processing, she examines how energy dependence has shaped global power structures and the challenges of mitigating its consequences.
This in-person event will be held on the UC Berkeley Campus at Alumni House, Toll Room, and will follow evolving public health guidelines.
