Objectives:
- Understand the symptoms of disorders that commonly overlap with ASD, including Anxiety, Depression, Irritability
- Explore how to find actionable interventions for co-occurring conditions
- Identify when these co-occurring behaviors/symptoms need specialized intervention
- Identify team members who can help address these symptoms that are “above and beyond” what is expected in ASD
- Learn how to communicate concerns regarding co-occurring symptoms with members of the person with ASD’s team
Presenters:
Dr. Justin Schwartz is a developmental-behavioral pediatrician at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed his pediatrics residency at UAB and his developmental-behavioral pediatric fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard University. He currently serves as the associate director of the Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at UAB and the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND) training program. He has served and continues to serve on several statewide committees, including the Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council and the Mental Health committee of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Sarah O’Kelley, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Director of UAB’s LEND and UCEDD programs, which are part of the Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at UAB. She has been involved in research and clinical activities with individuals with ASD and their families for nearly 25 years. Her research interests include cognitive/behavioral phenotypes of individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities, screening and early identification, and issues across the lifespan for individuals with ASD. She currently serves as co-leader of the Birth to 5 Subcommittee of the Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council and is active in the Alabama Autism Providers Network.
