About this Event
Following its initial presentation at Penthouse Gallery, TYP Vol. 01 continues in a newly established space in Santa Monica, extending the dialogue introduced in Los Angeles. This second chapter revisits the works of Seishu Niihira, Kyotaro Hakamata, and Shiro Matsui, offering a renewed context in which their practices can be experienced.
Bringing together three artists from different generations, TYP Vol. 01 explores fundamental questions surrounding perception, material, and existence. Niihira engages with the conditions of image-making in the age of AI, translating incomplete digital outputs into paintings that challenge how we perceive completion. Hakamata interrogates the structure of sculpture itself, using hollow forms and layered materials to destabilize distinctions between surface and substance. Matsui expands sculpture into spatial and experiential realms, prompting viewers to reconsider their position within systems of space and time.
Presented within a different architectural and environmental setting, this continuation emphasizes how context reshapes the experience of each work. The exhibition is not a repetition, but an evolution—inviting viewers to encounter the same works through a shifted spatial and perceptual framework.
In Santa Monica, a location shaped by both natural light and the visual culture of Los Angeles, the exhibition further reflects on how contemporary Japanese art engages with global conditions while maintaining distinct cultural perspectives.
The gallery is open on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Visits are by appointment only; please contact us in advance to schedule a visit.
