About this Event
Following its inaugural exhibition, Penthouse Gallery presents TYP Vol. 02, a solo exhibition by Yasuyoshi Botan.
Born in Osaka in 1971, Botan studied painting in New York and has developed an international practice through exhibitions and residencies across Europe and Japan. While his work spans multiple disciplines, painting remains central to his practice.
Botan’s paintings do not seek to depict objects themselves, but rather the subtle relationship between what is visible and what lies beyond. Motifs such as trees, figures, and landscapes emerge in translucent layers, appearing and dissolving through light. These images evoke a sense of suspended narrative, as if capturing a fleeting moment within an unfolding story.
Central to his work is the tension between reality and fiction. His compositions resist fixed spatial logic, allowing multiple temporalities and perceptual layers to coexist. Through fluid brushwork and the materiality of oil paint, Botan embeds duration into the surface, transforming painting into a field where time accumulates rather than a single moment being captured.
"I’ve owned Botan’s works for over ten years now, and ever since I first saw them, I’ve been both struck by and deeply attached to her art—works that combine the boldness and delicacy of pencil and brush, while elevating the world of picture books to the realm of contemporary art."
The exhibition will be open until June 28.
