The Historic Pullman Garden Club and Historic Pullman Foundation invite you to the second in the series of three Winter events at the Florence Lowden Miller Center, 614 E 113th St, Chicago IL. On Sunday February 23rd, 2025, at 2pm, Andreas Morgen and Tom Shepherd, Pullman residents, will present "Frederick Law Olmsted" plus "The African American Water Trail", a two-part presentation showcasing Frederick Law Olmsted’s Chicago connection, then transitioning to the development of the African American Water Trail. The program is free, and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served. Questions can be sent to [email protected].
Frederick Law Olmsted, one of the great landscape designers of our time, will be presented by Andreas Morgen, a neighborhood Pullman historian, with an especial interest in the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, which Olmsted was very involved with. If you have read "The Devil and the White City", you have "met" Olmsted! He also designed Central Park in NY city.
Tom Shepherd will be highlighting the development of the African American Water Trail - from Beaubien Woods to Robbins. As a Southsider with valuable knowledge of the area, Tom will be talking about the seven mile stretch of the Little Calumet River which celebrates both Nature and the stories of African Americans escaping persecution who settled on and traversed its waters.
