Earlier this year, we lost an artist whose works affected both me, and the world of cinema, in ways that cannot be properly expressed by words alone. David Lynch's works all had this type of effect; an effect where you feel something within you, that you can in no way ever dream to articulate. This, to me, is the ultimate meaning of art; to express and invoke what you cannot do without it.

At Cinema Neuf, we will take a look at one of his works, which very much does have this effect. Fire Walk with Me could so easily have been a simple return to the cozy, yet dark world of twin peaks, but instead, Lynch made the return everything but simple. Before even returning to Twin peaks, we meet characters we never saw in the series, in a different, warped small-town, where a murder has taken place. We see a town similar to that of Twin Peaks, but there's a palpable sense that something's missing..

The behind-the-scenes turmoil of the television-series is well documented at this point; with the studio demanding that mysteries designed to be evergreen were abruptly resolved, and the series quickly losing its footing after Lynch left the show in the middle of season 2. Upon its cancellation however, Lynch desided to return to the world of Twin Peaks --briefly-- not necessarily to tie up his loose ends; but perhaps more so to untie knots tied by others, and to then explore deeply and earnestly, what the ropes were made of, and to explore and enlighten the darkness within their fibers.

As with all of his films, there's seemingly no end to the creativity of Fire Walk with Me. It polarized audiences when it was first released, but is now rightfully hailed by many as another David Lynch masterpiece. The man himself may have passed on, but through his works, and all of us who watch his films, his artistry most certainly lives on.

Rest in Piece, David Lynch
