A little info about the Charge and the Foundation:
Origins
• The Rhino Charge was created in 1989 to raise funds for the Aberdare Electric Fence.
• It was initiated by Ken Kuhle (Rhino Ark founder), Rob Combes, and Brian Haworth.
• The aim was to protect rhinos in Aberdare National Park and reduce human-wildlife
conflict.
• The first event on 4th Feb 1989 had 31 vehicles and raised KES 250,000.
• By 2018, fundraising had grown to KES 183 million in a single event.
Current Situation
• The Rhino Charge is a one-day off-road motorsport event limited to 65 vehicles.
• Competitors must visit 13 control points across ~100 sq km of rough terrain within 10
hours.
• Winners are determined by the shortest GPS-measured distance traveled.
• The event demands bravery, skill, and navigation expertise, attracting high
competition for entry.
• Preferential entry is given to top fundraisers due to oversubscription.
• It is run by a volunteer committee and held in a different remote location each year.
• The venue remains secret until event day to ensure fairness.
Fundraising & Impact
• Competitors must pledge a minimum sponsorship, but many raise far more.
• Between 1989–2022, the event raised KES 1.9 billion for conservation.
• Funds support building and maintaining electric fences (Aberdare, Mt. Kenya, Mau
