Tuvan throat singing- Khöömei workshop with Imre Peemot.
This workshop will be one of the first events at Helsinki Zen Center's new premises.
Day 1. Friday 06/12/2024
From 15:00 to 20:00
During the first hour we will do a vocal warm up, based on techniques from Indian classical forms of singing- Dhrupad (the oldest form of Indian classical music), which Imre has found to be useful for throat singing as well. Over the following 4 hours we will be focusing on the kargyraa styles, both fundamental techniques of Dag (mountain) as well as Khovu (steppe) kargyraa. We will also be studying the techniques in which overtones are used as well as the sub categories applied to kargyraa fundamentals. They will be explained and presented first with general examples and then applied to every single participant according to their level. Previous experience is not required and everyone at all levels will be supported and given instructions to enhance their performance.
Day 2. Saturday 07/12/2024
From 14:00 to 19:00
During the first hour we will do the same warm up as on the first day and during the following 4 hours we will focus on the fundamentals of the khöömei technique. Mainly on the concept of khörekteer, (the practice of khörekteer provides strong power to this style of singing and enhances the techniques based on khöömei and affecting even those based on kargyraa), as well as overtone techniques, the style of sygyt and all the sub styles based on the fundamentals of khöömei. Again they will be explained and presented with general and individual examples for everyone’s needs according to their levels.
IMRE PEEMOT was born in Estonia and has mainly been living in Finland since 1991. He has been traveling to learn vocals and instruments from various “world music” traditions around the world. One of the most important of these has been Tuva. For the past 23 years he has been a practitioner of tuvan throat singing. He has been acclaimed in Tuva and internationally as one of the finest. Based on the tuvan folk tradition, or its aesthetics, he has released albums both solo and with group Cedip Tur. He has performed and taught in many countries around Europe and in Tuva. During his years of practicing he has understood that even when he met great singers to learn from, he couldn't stick to a precise explanations of the various techniques of tuvan throat singing. They often don't have the tools nor the need to pass the knowledge other than traditional way, which is to listen on a daily basis and naturally absorb the tradition among Tuvans themselves. For Western minds there need to be more effective tools to facilitate the way towards authentic quality. Imre has created his own teaching methods to help many non-tuvan students to understand better. His workshops are usually international and are attended by people with different backgrounds and vocal experience.
Workshop will be held in English or Finnish depending on participants.
Early bird price for 2 day workshop (10 hours) payed before the 14th of November is 130 euros per person. After the 14th of November it will be 150 euros per person. 50 euros is paid in advance and the rest at the workshop.
