About this Event
About the two Events:
The TUM Speakers Series is proud to be part of the TUM Sustainability Day — presenting an evening of two keynotes at the intersection of sustainability, responsibility, and the future we are building together.
"TUM Sustainability Day" brings together two exceptional voices to explore what progress means in a world defined by ecological limits, social inequality, and technological transformation.
The evening features two consecutive keynotes, each followed by a moderated discussion, offering guests the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers.
Sara Nuru — Who Does Progress Serve? Rethinking Growth in a Changing World (18:00)
Progress is frequently measured in growth — but growth alone is no proof of progress. What matters is who that progress serves. In her keynote, Sara Nuru examines sustainability in its ecological, economic, and social dimensions, drawing on her experience as an entrepreneur and activist to make the case for why social sustainability and equitable distribution are among the defining questions of our time.
Sara Nuru is an entrepreneur, model, speaker, and author with a strong commitment to female empowerment, social sustainability, and fair trade. In 2018, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) appointed the Erding-born activist as Ambassador for Sustainable Development, a role in which she advocates for equal opportunities and the empowerment of women, demonstrating how entrepreneurial responsibility can drive social change.
Samantha Cristoforetti — Beyond the Horizon: Defining Europe's Path in the Next Space Era (19:00)
What is the future of human spaceflight, and what role can Europe play in shaping it? Drawing on nearly 400 days aboard the International Space Station and her direct involvement in ESA's commercial space programmes, Samantha Cristoforetti examines the forces reshaping space exploration: the rise of commercial providers, the transition beyond the ISS, and the strategic choices facing Europe. From low Earth orbit to exploration beyond, she will address the technological, industrial, and political questions that will define Europe's position in space in the years ahead.
Samantha Cristoforetti is one of Europe's most accomplished astronauts. A veteran of two long-duration missions aboard the ISS, she served as ISS Commander during her second mission in 2022 — the first European woman to hold that role. She holds advanced degrees in aeronautical engineering and is a former Italian Air Force pilot.
