As part of his ongoing Rumiverse—an attempt to bring Rumi closer to Indian audiences through translations, performances, and dialogue—Ashwin Afraad now presents Tuka Mhane Rumi La.
This journey has taken shape through his books of Rumi’s translations in Urdu and Marathi, as well as mehfils like Rumi Hai and Rumi Meets Kabeer. Building on these explorations, this new presentation brings Rumi and Tukaram into a shared poetic and philosophical space.
Featuring Gandhar Joshi and Sawani Shikhare, the mehfil traces parallels in their lives, their spiritual thought, and their modes of expression. Though rooted in different traditions, their voices begin to resonate as reflections of the same inner truth.
What makes this presentation especially distinctive is its form: for the first time, Rumi’s poetry is rendered in Marathi in the abhang format. This is not merely translation, but a re-imagination—where Rumi’s Sufi philosophy finds a natural cadence within Tukaram’s bhakti tradition.
The result is a seamless dialogue—one philosophy, many expressions.
