John Sorensen’s “The Southport Sound” big band, in collaboration with The Stella Hotel and Ballroom, 5706 Eighth Avenue, is back for a post-holiday open rehearsal/performance on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. The event, from 7-9 p.m., is free and open to the public.Established ten years ago by local musician, educator, and US Navy member John Sorensen, the 11-member show band is now led from the guitar section by local musician Terry Peterson and includes talented local music educators, professional musicians as well as some rising stars.
“We open our rehearsals to the public in order to try out new material as well as polish some of our standards,” Peterson said. “We have been fortunate to find a beautiful performance venue at The Stella Hotel and Ballroom in which to showcase our talented musicians.”
The band’s staple repertoire includes music by Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. TSS also performs classics from every era including doo-wop, disco, Latin and classic rock and roll.
The Stella staff provides a ballroom bar for beverages, chairs for seating, and plenty of room for dancing.
