About this Event
Attention: Middle and High School Students + Parents: Join us for the free TRUST program - an education, testing, and certification program for middle and high school students interested in recreational drone flying.
If you have ever wanted to fly a drone recreationally, you must now pass the TRUST Certification test before you can fly. TRUST is a free training and test offered through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This short 2-hour course, sponsored by the Sullenberger Aviation Museum, CMPD and DroneScape, prepares you to pass the TRUST test and learn about this growing industry and future career opportunities.
• COST: It is FREE - Attendance is limited - on a first reserved basis. We encourage parents to attend.
• FREE DRONE: There will be a drawing for one free drone (you must complete the certification to be eligible)
About TRUST (FAA): TRUST is The Recreational UAS Safety Test
The TRUST training includes learning about the following:
o Drone Rules
o Airspace (free charts will be given out courtesy of the North Carolina Department of Transportation)
o Weather
o Drone careers and drone demos Note: Federal law requires all recreational flyers to pass an aeronautical knowledge and safety test. The FAA developed The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) to meet this requirement.
All recreational drone flyers need to understand the requirements (49 U.S.C 44809) for flying safely and pass The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST). After you pass the test, you will receive a completion certificate. Be sure to keep this required certificate with you when you fly your drone. If your drone weighs more than .55 pounds (lbs), you must register your drone through the FAA's Drone Zone.
Before You Fly Your Drone
• Understand recreational flying requirements
o Visit the Recreational Flyers page to learn about rules for recreational flyers.
o Download the FAA's B4UFLY mobile app for more recreational drone flying resources.
o Take the TRUST Program - All test questions are correctable to 100% prior to issuing your completion certificate. After completing TRUST, you'll need to download, save or print your completion certificate. If you lose your certificate, you will need to re-take TRUST.
• Receive your certificate
o After you pass the test, you will receive a certificate from the test administrator you selected.
o Test administrators will not keep a record of your certificate. You must present a copy of your certificate if asked by law enforcement officers.
Immediately following the free TRUST event, there will be a cookout with Drone Charlotte, a group of Licensed Charlotte Drone Pilots that can share about their careers, show students their different drones, and allow students to see the drones in action.
