About this Event
Join us at the Old Police Cells Museum on May 29th for a unique book signing event set deep within the atmospheric holding cells beneath Brighton Town Hall. Dr Jonathan Oates will be joining us to talk about his new book on The Brighton Trunk Murders.
He is the researcher and author of many true crime books including the best-selling John Christie of Rillington Place.
Guests will have the opportunity to meet the author, purchase signed copies, and experience the museum’s guided tours, exploring over 100 years of Sussex policing history in the very building where it unfolded. The tour will run for 50 minutes and will be delivered by one of our knowledgeable guides.
Jonathan will provide a short talk at 10am, prior to tours commencing in the museum at 10:30.
Whether you’re a fan of local history, policing paraphernalia, or simply looking for a memorable cultural experience, this special event offers a rare chance to step behind the bars and into Brighton’s sordid past.
Dr Jonathan Oates is a prolific non-fiction author of over 50 published books. He focusses on true crime, the Jacobite rebellions, local and family history, but has also recently branched out into the seventeenth century. His day job is Borough Archivist for Ealing in west London. He lives in Buckinghamshire.
In 1934 the corpses of two women were found in trunks in Brighton. No one was ever convicted of either M**der. The first one to be found was never identified. Over the years several suspects have emerged. As to the second, the killer was identified but got away with M**der and later confessed. This new examination of these crimes draws heavily on the case files at the National Archives and East Sussex Record Office and is the most comprehensive to date.
