TRUMPED!
Hunter S Thompson, writing in the black heart of Watergate, asked of Richard Nixon, “how low do you have to sink to be elected president of this country?”
Donald Trump’s re-election puts Nixon in the shade, leaving many people in a state of shock and dread as his first few days in office served to confirm their worst fears. In the months and years to come, literally anything could happen. As the wise old ones say - You Couldn’t Make It Up.
For some of us, though, it’s worse. Spare a thought for the satirists, whose job it is precisely to make it up and laugh ludicrous clowns like Trump back into The Dustbin of History. But how do you ridicule the ridiculous? How do you Reducto ad Absurdum when Absurdum’s over the horizon with its hooves up on the Oval Office desk? How, in short, do you kick against pricks as big as Trump and his gang of techbro billionaires?
At a time when increasing numbers of US political cartoonists are being censored or sacked for the mildest criticism of Trump, by editors too cowardly to stand up to proprietors oblivious to all consideration beyond grovelling to the Mango Mussolini squatting in the White House, cartoonist, satirist and Brockley Max and Edinburgh Fringe regular Martin Rowson might - just might - have the answer.
Or he might not.
But in his completely new show, “Trumped”, drawing on insights from his 40 years in frontline journalism and the thousands of cartoons about British, US & global politics he’s produced in The Guardian and almost every other publication you can think of (apart from The Sun & Private Eye), he’s hellbent on having a lot of desperately needed fun finding out...
Expect cartoons. Expect jokes. Expect radical analysis, ranting and startling insights. Probably expect food based action painting. Just don’t expect an answer to Hunter S Thompson’s question. We already know to answer to that one, God help us..
Martin Rowson is a multi-award winning cartoonist, writer, graphic novelist, painter, illustrator, performer and poet.
