Normal Cinema Club is proud to present a night of films about connection, opening up to other people and taking a walk in someone else's shoes - no more spite or misanthropy, this is nicecore fr !!
To illustrate our open-mindedness, NCC will be screening TRUE STORIES (1986) by up-and-coming band you probably haven't heard of Talking Heads. The film follows frontman David Byrne as he explores the town of Virgil, Texas on the eve of its 'celebration of specialness'. Outside of John Goodman's attempts to find a life partner, there is no narrative propulsion to True Stories, just David Byrne in a cowboy hat walking around and chatting to people. They get a song or two in there along the way too.
Prior to the feature, we will also be screening Julia Mervis' THE MISERY LINE and Conor Kehelly's THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN, two shorts about understanding the people and world around us. The Misery Line follows Mervis as she takes the tube from High Barnett to Morden, the longest line on the London Underground, and speaks to commuters on their journey. She asks if they speak to other people on their journey, and if not, why not. Kehelly's flick is an animated odyssey into the heart of social graces and the environments we build in our own image. What begins as a surreal take on a domestic meltdown becomes an earnest attempt to understand the stress, anxiety and anger that tempers the zeitgeist nowadays.
This screening will take place upstairs in The Sunflower Bar, which is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Doors will open at 6.45pm, with the shorts beginning shortly after 7pm. There will be a break before the feature. This is a strictly 18+ event.
