Join us at the Northern Ireland War Memorial on Monday 27 January 2025 from 7pm-8:15pm for a special event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.Dan Lewis will share the story of his grandmother, Helen Lewis MBE. Helen was a professional dancer and choreographer, living in Prague before she was deported to Terezin in 1942. Helen survived Terezin, Auschwitz, Stutthof and a death march, before returning to Prague at the end of the war and emigrating to Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1947. She later resumed her career as a professional dancer and choreographer and is remembered by a blue plaque on the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast.
Dan's online presentation includes readings from Helen's memoir, 'A Time To Speak'.
Following the presentation, a candle will be lit to mark Helen's life and Holocaust Memorial Day 2025. The candle will be mounted in a unique, ornamental stand inspired by Helen Lewis’ story and created by Belfast-based artist Leanne McClean as part of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust's 80 Candles for 80 Years Project.
Artworks from the NIWM collection, also inspired by Helen's story, will be on display. These are from a series of paintings entitled 'My Name Is Might Have Been' by local artist Leslie Nicholl and depict the faces of those who experienced the Holocaust.
