Please read entire description for details!TRR Fredericksburg is hosting monthly sessions on the James River for Veterans & their families from Virginia chapters!
These sessions are open to intermediate level kayakers with the appropriate winter gear (drysuit, pogies, gloves) and rafters with the appropriate gear. Rafting coordination is required in advance for all trips. TRR will need to plan for rafts to be on hand unless intermediate level rafters are providing their own and then we need to know for accountability purposes. TRR chapters outside of the Fredericksburg chapter should plan to support raft requests for their members.
Note: These sessions will be water level and temperature dependent. If the James River is above 6.5 ft the session will be moved to the Upper James for fun there and will be noted on the FB page and logistics emails in advance. Trips will go rain or shine as long as there is no lightning, no river ice, air temperatures are over 35F, water temperature is over 40F and/or wind under 15 mph. Climate conditions are a real safety concern during the winter. Additional direct communication will be provided to those that reply as intending to join per the below instructions.
Participants should sign up in advance of the session to ensure we have good ratio of TRR guides to participants in place as well as clear communication about the specific event. If you have never kayaked or rafted the Lower James with TRR before you need to be cleared prior to joining us on the water for the needed LJ skills. Chapter participants from outside of TRR Fredericksburg should discuss your current skill level with your chapter lead in advance of planning to attend for approval.
Participants should have the necessary winter gear, ferrying, eddying, edge control and combat rolling skills needed for Class 3/3+ whitewater. All participants should have the necessary self rescue skills and ability to swim in cold water. Participants should plan to come with appropriate gear or you will not be able to participate for safety reasons. If gear is needed it must be coordinated in advance with Chapter leads as it is not kept on site in Richmond.
For the Lower James we will meet at the 14th Street takeout (top lot) to set shuttle and plan to leave the takeout at 1300 ET for the put in. If we are on the Upper James we will meet at Reedy takeout at 1300 ET (parking will need to be coordinated in advance for Reedy).
Please contact [email protected] and Cc your chapter lead with your intent to join the trip at least 1 week in advance of the trip. If you plan to raft please let us know that specifically in advance, to include if you own the raft and have seats for others. If you need a raft seat, we will need to determine if we can provide it on the date requested and will provide follow up information to you if a raft is available. If you are external to the TRR Fredericksburg chapter please also discuss with your Chapter lead so they are tracking participation in the event.
