The Miami Art Society is proud to present Tropical Brainstorm, a solo exhibition by Gustavo Oviedo, on November 21, 2024, at the Good time Hotel in Miami Beach. This immersive event will feature over 20 new paintings, ceramics, and collages, alongside the launch of Oviedo’s latest art book, Tropical Brainstorm.
Inspired by his ocean expeditions, interest in biomorphic forms and the controlled chaos of natural systems, Tropical Brainstorm draws from Oviedo’s experiences as a diver and underwater videographer. Exploring shipwrecks in remote locations, Oviedo captures the interactions between marine life, the sea, and human debris.
His abstract works reflect nature’s evolving patterns, built around recurring "form families" that symbolize the different types of systems he observes. These narratives delve into form, function, and subconscious imagery, echoing the organic patterns of coral colonies as they evolve through a process of choice and adaptation.
For this exhibition, Oviedo highlights his signature “Brainstorms”—cloud and lightning hybrid shapes—showcasing his improvisational approach and the varied possibilities that emerge from a singular source. The event will also debut his new 96-page art book, Tropical Brainstorm, which offers a deeper exploration of his creative process through images of his paintings, murals, collages, and underwater photography. The book serves as a documentation of his 2024 body of work.

The evening will also mark the launch of Oviedo’s first fashion collaborations with two international brands:
- Piper and Skye (https://www.Piperandskye.com) : A collection titled Controlled Chaos, in which Oviedo transforms luxury handbags into canvases of sort by transforming each one of them into art objects subjected to different types of material experimentations, thus bluring the line between functionality and aesthetic.
- Italian Clothing Brand, A Few Pieces ( https://www.Afewpieces.it) : A limited-edition, two-piece outfit featuring his abstract painting Out of Order, depicting a series of organic forms coexisting with each other forming an abstract ecosystem, blending fashion and art.
Miguel Gonzalez (https://www.miguelgonzalez.art) will create a site specific light sculpture installation that will immerses the audience by crafting a custom choreographed symphony of flashing lights.
Live jazz performances will enhance the evening’s atmosphere, creating the perfect tone for this celebration of art and fashion.
The Good time Hotel, with its distinct blend of luxury and playfulness, provides the perfect setting for the exhibition. Ken Fulk’s vibrant interior design is complemented by Oviedo’s artistic vision, creating intimate spaces that invite guests to relax, explore, and embark on a creative adventure.
