Tricia VisserPer(pet)ual Memorium
23 May to 13 June 2026
Opening on Saturday 23 May 2026 at 11:00 at the Association of Arts Pretoria, together with Maria Pienaar’ s Water, is Rustenburg ceramic artist Tricia Visser’s Per(pet)ual Memorium.
The artist states: “When a pet dies, I find myself profoundly moved within a complex emotional landscape of grief, memory and longing. I have empathy for the traumatic memories engendered by the loss of a beloved pet and have been asked to create memorials for other grieving pet owners.”
The ceramic sculptures in Per(pet)ual Memorium are embedded with fragments of the pets’ favourite soft toys and bone ash: enduring reminders of their lives. Visser’s work excavates the connection between anthropomorphism and attachment theory, exploring the bonds forged between humans and animals. Her work creates an intimate space for reflection and dialogue. It encourages others to explore their relationships with their pets and how they shape our lives,
Visser obtained a BA Degree in Visual Arts in 2016 at the University of South Africa. She has participated in a range of art exhibitions such as the Animals in Law and Society: Perspectives from Africa and Beyond at the International Animal Ethics conference held in Pretoria at Unisa. Visser adds: “Since I’m a ceramic sculptor, I enjoy hand-building techniques such as coiling, slabbing and pinching. These methods can be used to create almost any sculpture.”
In the Spanish film My Dearest Señorita the character A.D says: “The best moments in my life have come from the beauty created by others.” Experience such moments at the Association of Arts Pretoria with these two exhibitions as from 23 May 2026.
