About this Event
Workshop With Dr Nicola Wallbank .
The Tree Warden Scheme is a national volunteer network that empowers communities to care for, protect and celebrate their local trees, and this condensed session introduces all the core knowledge a new Tree Warden needs.
We start with the origins of the scheme and the role of The Tree Council, formed in response to the devastating impacts of Dutch elm disease and later strengthened by the need for coordinated community action after major storm events, both of which highlighted the vital role of volunteers in safeguarding our treescape.
We then cover the basics of tree biology, how trees grow, function and interact with their environment, giving wardens the confidence to observe and understand tree health. From there, we explore the current threats and challenges facing trees, including pests and diseases, climate pressures, soil compaction, and human impacts. Finally, we outline the key elements of trees and the law, giving volunteers an understanding of the protections and responsibilities that help safeguard our treescapes. Fundamentally, this introduction is designed to inspire people to become champions for trees — to notice them more, value them more, and feel confident speaking up for their care. Throughout the session we'll be exploring just how amazing trees are and why they deserve our attention, enthusiasm and protection.
