About this Event
Intro
Come and have a fun day with Protect Earth on the 6th or 7th December 2025!
Protect Earth is a registered charity, helping farmers and landowners increase tree cover and biodiversity on their land. We plant trees on unused and degraded farmland, use trees to provide shade and shelter for crops and livestock, create wildflower meadows, and help with tree maintenance for saplings that are struggling.
What is happening?
We are delighted to be adding our support to local environmental charity 9Trees to help a mutual friend with big ideas who wants to create a 34-acre woodland just a few miles south of Bristol. Over three winters the landowners will plant about 26,000 trees and shrubs with the intention of creating a permanent woodland to help address climate change and biodiversity loss.
Of the thirty-four acres here, seven acres will remain open space. This will form multiple clearings and ten-meter-wide rides between each of the five major blocks of woodland and around the site perimeter. This means that there will be lots of woodland edges, which will have a variable width border of shrubby species and smaller trees. These will provide shelter and food for wildlife, much of the wildlife in a woodland inhabits the edges rather than the high canopy or the shaded interior.
We appreciate volunteers who are able to come for part of the day, a whole day or even the whole weekend, and children are welcome. We love it when the local community gets involved in their area, and also welcome guests from further away. It allows us to make new friends, catch up with friends we've made, and learn what people love about their communities while talking to them about enriching local biodiversity.
Full details will be sent out a week before the event, including map links to the address and meeting place.
What do I need to bring/ know?
No previous experience is necessary, weโll train you up and provide all the necessary equipment. Please come dressed for the weather. There is a big barn for shelter and a toilet is available.
The landowner will provide a hot lunch, tea, coffee, and biscuits to keep you going. Vegetarian options will be available, please advise of any allergies or other dietary requirements when booking.
Will there be parking?
There is on-site parking. Whenever possible we encourage volunteers to car share, use public transportation, or even cycle, to keep emissions down and avoid stressing parking space.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Bad weather is difficult to plan for. In general, we will continue to plant if itโs raining, but if a severe storm is forecast or the ground is frozen, we will have to postpone an event. We will try and notify you as soon as we possibly can, and youโll be invited to the rescheduled event.
