Being "trauma informed" means being able to recognise when someone may be affected by trauma, collaboratively adjusting how we work to take this into account and responding in a way that supports recovery, does no harm and recognises and supports people's resilience.
To support Inverclyde's ambition to become a trauma informed and responsive local authority, a Trauma Enhanced (Level 3) training programme is now available to staff working in Inverclyde.
Who is this training for?
This training is aimed at anyone who has a specific remit to respond to people know to be affected by trauma AND are required to provide advocacy, support or interventions OR are required to adapt the way they work to take into account trauma reactions to do their job well and reduce risk of re-traumatisation.
As a rough guide, some example roles who may be likely to be working at a Trauma Enhanced practice level are: mental health nurses and workers, social workers, specialist domestic abuse support and advocacy workers, drug and alcohol workers, specialist counsellors, educational support teachers, some specialist police officers, some psychiatrists, forensic medical examiners, Pr*son staff and secure unit workers. This list is not exhaustive however, and workers are encouraged to consider their own role and remit to determine the most suitable level of training for them. You may also find this Practice Type Checker a helpful guide.
Overview of the training
This 2-day training aims to help deepen your understanding and refine your skills in working with service users (children, young people and adults) with a history of trauma and likely experiencing complex post-traumatic stress. It has been designed in line with the latest neuroscience to equip you with the advanced knowledge, skill, and resources necessary to guide people towards safety and stabilisation as part of a three phased recovery process.
The training aims to be a creative, safe and collaborative learning atmosphere that encourages discussion, reflection, and peer support.
The learning outcomes over the two days are:
- Understanding trauma through a biopsychosocial lens to comprehend prevalence and how we recognise, respond and resist re-traumatisation.
- The link between trauma, symptomatology and engaging people who have long-standing protective patterns which create collisions with services.
- Understanding human brain development and the neurobiology of trauma, including how to apply this in psychoeducational practice.
- Understanding early childhood development, attachment and triggers to apply self-regulation models and other individually tailored techniques to support grounding and coping with hyper and hypo aroused states.
- Understanding the concept of adverse childhood and community experiences, the biology of stress, and links to poor health outcomes.
- How to apply compassionate enquiry and trauma informed responses with spontaneous disclosure.
- Understanding interpersonal difficulties and working within CFT framework to strengthening resilient factors and relational health to aid recovery.
- Understanding and developing a plan to introduce TIP principles in all aspect of the workplace, policy and practice.
- Understanding how to recognise signs of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and apply self-care strategies.
- Understanding the role of the community in preventing and healing trauma and supporting people where necessary to access additional appropriate services/specific specialist therapeutic interventions.
The course is also certified by the CPD Standards Office and your certification upon completion will equate to 12 hours of CPD.
Please note: We know that traumatic experiences are common. During this event, traumatic experiences will not be talked about in detail, and you will not be asked to share any personal experiences of trauma. However, topics discussed in the session can be emotive for many people, so please do consider your own wellbeing during and after the session.
