This Irish Design Week, the IAF, 100xArchive and the Irish Architectural Archive begin a new collaboration, exploring how the two disciplines of design have worked together to form and reform a sense of Ireland at Venice. Join Lara Hanlon, and Jayden Ali, and a panel of designers drawn from architecture and graphics who have worked at Venice in this unique discussion.

Since 2000, and thirteen times to date, Ireland has selected and sent architecture ‘ambassadors’ to the Biennale in Venice, hailed as “the key global embodiment of the curatorial bias of not only contemporary culture but also architectural life, or at least how we imagine, represent and display that life.”
A review of the 13 National Participations of Ireland at Venice show that the exhibition team has always included a communication or graphic designer. If the Biennale remains a presentation of local and current ideas from any given country, drawn from and through architecture, presented as an exhibition, and translated for a gathered, global audience in Venice, what role has design – both architectural and graphic – played in the development of our Irish identity?
