About this Event
Translations is set in 1833 in the fictional village of Baile Beag, in Ireland’s County Donegal. This is 33 years after the English Act of Union abolished Ireland’s Parliament and 12 years before the Great Famine would devastate the Irish people on an unprecedented scale. What we see in this play is a snapshot of a society in transition. It chronicles the efforts of occupiers to suppress and erase an indigenous language and culture. The characters in the play, though fictional, depict the enduring spirit of the Irish people and the sheer will to preserve our human heritage.
The play will be preceded by a conversation with Consul General of Ireland in Los Angeles, Caitlín Higgins Ní Chinnéide, Professor of Philosophy, Brian Treanor, Chair of Theater Arts, Stacey Cabaj and MFA Co-directors, Eileen O'Connell and Ryan McRee. There will also be a short reception in the lobby after the show.
