Artist Debbie Pounders will walk beginners and intermediate-level participants through an engaging series, while teaching unique uses of acrylic paint on canvas.
She will guide the group through the treatment of acrylic paint as if it were oil: using tools and application tricks to build up a textured surface while learning more painting skills.
About the Instructor:
I began painting on my own in 2007 after working in pencil all my life. I painted in acrylics with my fingers first, then taught myself how to use brushes later.
I switched to oils when I was honored with an invitation to paint for “Portraits for Hope”. Portraits for Hope was a federally funded family program that invited some of our leading artists in Florida to come together during its funded reign 2015-2016.
We individually painted children who sadly lost their lives to Florida gang violence or home domestic violence cases; some still to this day are cold cases and unsolved.
Rising to this challenge was an honor and taught all of us valuable lessons in work and loss. The paintings, once completed, were then presented in person to their families. After I personally painted 22 kids and met parents, siblings, and Grandparents, we ran out of funding, and I needed happiness in my life. I began painting in oils, and I chose to paint ballet dancers, then horses, commissioned portraits, and abstract flowers.
Since those days, I have been published in several editions of Southwest Art Magazine and several books.
Painting in acrylics is a different mindset and actually more of a challenge than oils. Like oils, however, we will paint in layers. My reference for this class is my own photo of a beautiful Anhinga, which graces our back yard pond every spring. I am providing my drawing on a prepped canvas panel, 9” x 12”, for you to complete your painting and for you to cherish. When I gather the roster preparing for this workshop, I will share with you my photo by email so that you can load it on your iPad or phone for your reference. I prefer iPad or a phone to using paper photo reference because of the reality of being present, as if you are seeing this Anhinga too!
Everything that I have listed is available either at PV Arts and Crafts or Jerry’s Art-a-Rama. If you are unable to obtain certain things on my list, please let me know, and we’ll work together.
We’re going to get serious, but we are going to have some fun!
