About this Event
After securing a faculty position, the principal investigator must establish their labs, hire staff, secure funding, publish, mentor trainees, serve on committees, and form collaborations, all whilst preparing for tenure. Making the transition from postdoc to principal investigator can thus be a daunting process. Even the first steps in this endeavor, applying and interviewing for faculty positions and negotiating an offer may be unfamiliar to many postdocs. With these considerations in mind, a seminar series on transitioning to research independence was developed.
The seminar series consists of 9 seminars divided into two parts. Part I covers the nuts and bolts of seeking, choosing, and obtaining a faculty position. Part II focuses on strategies for leading and managing a research group, securing funding, mentoring trainees and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The course has been modeled after the Making the Right Moves, A Practical Guide to Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty manual by Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The course is geared towards postdoctoral researchers and fellows who plan to set up their own laboratory and develop their own research program at an academic institution. This course is open to all postdocs and students at Rockefeller University, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Memorial Sloan Kettering.
LEARNING GOALS
- Comprehending the faculty application and interviewing process as well as the basics of negotiating a faculty job offer and the structure of a new faculty start-up package
- Understanding strategies for funding, mentoring, management, and leadership to effectively run a research group
By the end of the seminars, participants should be able to:
- Structure a faculty job application, apply for a faculty position and prepare for an interview for a faculty position
- Analyze a faculty position offer and start-up package, determine reasonable needs, and negotiate the offer
- Identify the basics for setting up and staffing a laboratory research
- Discuss strategies to effectively manage time and projects
- Implement the tenets of team leadership when running a research group and be able to set clear expectations with team members
- Develop a funding strategy for the first few years after obtaining a faculty position
