About this Event
Join us for the inaugural Transit Book Club Salon, an intimate event series featuring behind-the-scenes discussions on Transit titles. Tickets are free for subscribers and book club-level donors and $10 for non-book club members. (And if you subscribe after the event we will put your ticket price toward the subscription.)
We're starting the series with a discussion of our first title of 2026: A Very Cold Winter by Fausta Cialente, originally written in 1966, translated from the Italian by Julia Nelsen. Julia and editor Ashley Nelson Levy will discuss how they discovered Cialente’s work, questions that came up during translating and editing, and Cialente’s role as an early feminist and anti-fascist writer in Italy. We’ll also be serving Italian wine and soda.
Julia Nelsen translates between English and Italian. A San Francisco native, she holds a PhD in comparative literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and a masters in European languages from the University of Milan, where she studied on a multiyear fellowship from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her work has appeared in Circumference, Two Lines, Chicago Review, Firmament, and elsewhere. A Very Cold Winter is her first full-length translation.
Ashley Nelson Levy is the co-publisher of Transit Books and the author of the novel Immediate Family.
