Please join us for the first California Chapter - 4 District collaboration.

We have prepared a fabulous, informative program about how Governor’s Island was transformed from an old army barracks to a beautiful, sustainable park, treasured by the residents of New York City using sustainable methods.

In speaking with Elaine Ingham last year, she told us the story of the Governor’s Island transformation and how Todd Harrington’s firm, Organic Land Care, was responsible for transforming the soil. We were hooked!

In 2014, two world-renowned landscape architecture companies approached Todd Harrington with a bold proposition. They needed to transform 42 acres of concrete rubble into a native polyculture ecosystem. In just two years, Todd carried out the biological transformation of the park in record time. Now, the park is a cherished site in New York City and an example of how the land can be restored using good design and biological methods.

“The regenerative beauty of Governor’s Island and its Diversity in compost creates a more varied and resilient ecosystem, leading to healthier and more productive soil.” Todd Harrington

This process should have taken 3-5 years but by using aggressive methods they were able to transform the soil in just 2 years. Todd met with the whole team of architects and engineers and took them through the whole process, explaining the equipment, application, testing and modifications that would be done based on the test results.

The principles of Dr. Elaine Ingham’s Soil Food Web were used for this project.

This event is approved for 1.5 CEUs.
