The Tragedy of Carmen, adapted from Carmen by Peter Brook, Jean-Claude Carrière, and Marius Constant, distills Bizet’s opera into a taut, psychologically driven 90-minute chamber work featuring many of the opera’s most beloved musical moments.
At its center is the volatile relationship between the free-spirited Carmen and the soldier Don José, whose consuming passion leads him to abandon his duty and identity in pursuit of her. As Carmen refuses to be possessed and asserts her independence, José’s love spirals into jealousy and desperation, culminating in a stark and inevitable tragedy that strips the story to its most raw and human core.
