Fernando Anuang’a, presents an outstanding dance residency and performance of TRADITIONAL FUTURE Saturday, January 25 at 7:30 PM at the Port Theatre, Nanaimo.
The show opens with a Snuneymuxw welcome by Lolly Good, a short film about the creation of the dance and produced by fashion designer, Pierre Cardin, and closes with Fernando’s powerful performance of Traditional Future.
This vibrant 80-minute evening reveals the intensity of a deeply rooted culture through a compelling contemporary fusion. Stay in your seats to speak with Fernando after the performance.
Traditional Future explores the question - how to evolve Tradition towards Modernity without obliterating one’s tracks, without betraying one’s roots?
As a unique and self-taught dancer/choreographer, Anuang’a’s work calls on the oral memory of the collective. He draws on Maasai songs, ancestral memory, and vocal rhythmic power for his gestural vocabulary and stark, stunning, physical, storytelling.
While in Nanaimo, Fernando Anuang´a, born and raised in Kenya, will share his knowledge and expertise of Maasai and contemporary dance in a short residency through two classes; one for the general public of all levels, and one for those who have dance training. Called Maasai Dance meets Contemporary, both sessions are open to all ages.
As part of his residency, Fernando and local poet, vocalist, Sonnet L’Abbé, will discuss stories of his life, artistry, and culture in a free evening known as Sharing is Caring, January 23, 6:00 PM at the Vault Café.
Local dancer and Afro Fusion Sharqi Dance creator, Tania Amaral (Mozambique) will read children’s stories from African authors at Harbour Front Library, February 8.
