In 1835, Charles Latrobe described Mexico City as "the City of Palaces." Looking back at Mexico's history since it was part of New Spain, we will visit two important buildings in Mexico City's centre: the Palacio de Mintería and the Palace of Communications and Public Works (today the National Art Museum), which form part of the cityscape that gave this connotation to the city.
The Palacio de Minería was built between 1797 and 1813 by the Spanish architect Manuel Tolsá to accommodate the Royal Spanish School of Mines and Mining and is now used as part of the School of Engineering of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
The Palace of Communications and Public Works was designed by Silvio Contri during the Porfirio Díaz regime to celebrate Mexico's Independence Centenary (1910) and was transformed into a museum in the late twentieth century.
