What is that big crane doing by Constellation? Why are people climbing in the rigging? What are all those spars and ropes doing on Pier 1? At 2 PM on Fridays through April 17, you can come by and learn the answer to these questions and more! USS Constellation is hosting a series of FREE rig talks, where guests can learn about the work that is being done to restore the ship's rig, see what work is being done on board and in the pierside "shipyard," and ask questions of the crew!
----
Rigging is central to Constellation's structural strength and her authenticity. A working vessel must replace its rigging regularly due to deterioration from the elements as well as strain and wear from use.
For museum ships like Constellation, rigging replacement is usually planned for approximately every 20 years to ensure safety, authenticity and long-term preservation.
Constellation's rig is periodically inspected and maintained by trained Historic Ships staff who climb the lines, booms, and spars to identify worn materials.
Like all historic structures requiring periodic wood or foundation renewal, a ship's rig must be periodically rebuilt in its entirety.
This project ensures that Constellation remains both structurally sound and visually true to original form, preserving her as a living symbol of maritime heritage.
Constellation's rig renovation is made possible by our hardworking carpenters and team from Traditional Rigging Co.
