About this Event

Come on a tour of the site of the Tallaght District Heating Scheme, which is the first large-scale district heating network of its kind in Ireland.

The scheme operates under Heat Works as the country’s first not-for-profit energy utility, owned by South Dublin County Council. This scheme makes a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions in the area, saving almost 1,500 tonnes of CO2 each year and establishing Tallaght as a leader in innovation in the area of climate change.

Tour Starting Point: Please meet directly outside the 10 minutes in advance of the tour starting. You can find the exact location by clicking .

This tour is taking place as part of Dublin Climate Action Week, which runs from the 9th - 15th September.

Background to the Tallaght District Heating Scheme

District heating is a network of highly-insulated pipes that delivers low-carbon heat from a central energy source to provide space heating and hot water to the buildings connected to the network. In the case of the Tallaght District Heating Scheme, this project delivers a high level of innovation, as waste heat from the nearby Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre supplies the heat to the network.

The system began providing heat to SDCC’s County Hall and Library and TU Dublin Tallaght buildings in January 2023, while the operation period commenced in July 2023. Further connections are due to be made in 2024, including new TU Dublin buildings and a new affordable housing scheme currently under development by the council.

The tour will be conducted by the Dublin energy agency Codema on behalf of South Dublin County Council.

Codema has helped South Dublin County Council to secure funding of almost €4.5 million for the Tallaght District Heating Scheme through the Government's Climate Action Fund, as well as support from the Interreg North-West Europe HeatNet NWE project and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.
