About this Event

Join Docomomo US/Northern California for a 90-minute walking tour of architect John Carl Warnecke’s 1963 College of San Mateo’s College Heights campus, led by Josh Weinberg, author of a recent feature article on the school.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Bay, the College Heights campus was envisioned from the outset as something more than a typical junior college. In the late 1950s, college leadership set out to create a setting that would convey the dignity, aspiration, and civic presence of a true institution of higher learning. Architecture became the means of expressing that ambition, and architect John Carl Warnecke responded with a campus conceived as a unified collegiate environment.

Structured along strong formal axes and terraced courts, the plan responds directly to the site’s topography, prevailing winds, and panoramic views—an early and compelling example of Warnecke’s contextual approach to modernism.

On the tour, you’ll move through the campus and experience its disciplined structural rhythm, folded-plate roof forms, deep overhangs, and colonnaded walkways that link the buildings into a cohesive whole. You’ll encounter the memorable Library—widely regarded as a distinguished West Coast expression of New Formalism—and consider it alongside other landmark works of the movement.

Though portions of the original campus have been altered or replaced, Warnecke’s underlying design remains remarkably intact, making College of San Mateo one of the Bay Area’s most complete and under-recognized mid-century modern environments. This tour is ideal for architects, planners, preservationists, students, and anyone curious about mid-century campus design and the ongoing stewardship of modernist landscapes.
The College of San Mateo campus is generally accessible, but portions of the tour involve outdoor routes, changes in grade, and standing for periods of time.
