This approx 10 mile route makes an easy start, becoming more challenging as it progresses with some rocky and unlevel going, and steep sections both up and down. Setting out on the Longdendale Trail, the opening section is level and surfaced. With a designated grass horse route alongside this portion of the Trans Pennine Trail, there are some good canter opportunities where going is dry enough. Leaving the trail passing the Woodhead Tunnels, the route ascends steeply onto Pikenaze Moor, where there are great views down to the reservoir. Joining the Northern Horse Route and Pennine Way, the route returns via quirky tracks, taking in bridges and pockets of woodland, before concluding by crossing over the Dam wall to rejoin the trail.
View the rote demo video here, it's a must watch prior to booking:

Worth noting:
Trail sections are multi-user. We may meet walkers with dogs, cyclists, buggies and off road wheelchairs.
Going is at times stony, rocky or unlevel going both up and downhill. Some tracks have steps to negotiate. NHR sections are often channelled, or running along a narrow ledge on a slope.
There are a number of sleeper type horse stiles across the route.
Some gates are narrow or have restricted openings.
Sections of the route run adjacent to the Woodhead road. Expect traffic, including HGVs passing at 50mph at close proximity.
There is no on road riding, but there are two crossings of an A road, and two crossings of a B road.
The route includes a number of wooden bridges, and a water crossing, none of which can be avoided.
There is a section on an embankment with unfenced drops into water on both sides.
Livestock will be encountered both on, and alongside the route. This includes barking dogs behind a fence adjacent to the path.
All riders must have their own Public liability insurance. Under 18s are welcome but on a first visit must be accompanied on the ride by an adult rider. Group sizes are limited to 6+guide. Payment of £45 per horse and rider combination secures your place on the ride. For more information please message the page/phone/email/visit the website.
