Torres Straits - The missing piece of the cultural capability puzzle

Join us in the Mabo room for an engaging and practical half-day workshop.

Many organisations are actively investing in Aboriginal cultural capability and progressing their Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs).

However, Torres Strait Islander perspectives are often not as deeply embedded within these efforts—creating a critical gap in otherwise well-developed frameworks.

This workshop addresses that gap directly.

Delivered by a Torres Strait Traditional Owner, educator and storyteller, this 3-hour intensive moves beyond awareness and into practical, applied cultural capability—supporting participants to strengthen how they engage, design, and deliver in their roles.

Leading into and during National Reconciliation Week (NRW), this session provides a timely opportunity to align individual and organisational capability with reconciliation commitments and expectations.

Why This Matters Now (NRW Focus)

NRW is more than reflection—it is a call to action and accountability.

For organisations with RAPs, and for educators shaping future generations, there is increasing expectation to:

  • Move beyond symbolic acknowledgement
  • Demonstrate depth in cultural understanding
  • Embed inclusive perspectives into practice

This workshop supports that shift.

What You Will Gain

This session is practical, engaging, and grounded in lived experience. Participants will:

  • Build confidence engaging with Torres Strait Islander perspectives
  • Understand the distinct cultural identity, knowledge systems, and lived realities of Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Strengthen their ability to apply cultural capability in policy, education, service delivery and workplace settings
  • Identify ways to translate RAP and reconciliation commitments into meaningful action

A Distinctive Approach

This is not standard cultural training.

The workshop integrates:

  • Lived experience as a Torres Strait Traditional Owner
  • Professional insight across education and engagement
  • Storytelling, including perspectives drawn from a newly published children’s book retelling a traditional Torres Strait Islander story

This creates a learning experience that is:

  • Authentic
  • Relatable
  • Memorable
  • Applicable across professional and educational contexts

Who Should Attend

Primary audiences:

  • State and Federal Government (HR, L&D, RAP leads, policy, service delivery)
  • Education sectors (State, Catholic, Independent schools, TAFE, universities)
  • Health and community service organisations

Also valuable for:

  • Teachers and school staff seeking professional development aligned to NRW
  • Organisations with RAPs or Indigenous engagement strategies
  • Leaders responsible for culture, inclusion, and workforce capability

Value for Schools and Educators

For schools, this workshop provides:

  • Practical support for embedding cultural perspectives in teaching and learning
  • Increased confidence among staff to engage respectfully and meaningfully
  • A professional development opportunity aligned to NRW and curriculum priorities
  • A connection between storytelling, culture, and student engagement

Call to Action

Places are limited to ensure a high-quality, interactive experience.

With sessions scheduled leading into and during National Reconciliation Week, this is a time-sensitive opportunity to strengthen cultural capability and align your organisation’s intent with meaningful action.

👉 Secure your place or enquire about group bookings to ensure your team is prepared to move beyond awareness and into impact.
