Interested in working on a new lab project at Genspace, but don’t quite know where to start? Join us for Tools of the Trade: Lab Skills, a monthly series designed to brush up on your lab skills and gain confidence working in the lab. Perfect for people who have taken a course or two with us and are thinking of joining the Genspace lab as members to launch their own scientific, bioart, or biodesign project.

In this session, we will teach you how to use the lab’s clean hood for plant tissue culture, how to sterilize lab instruments, and how to maintain a sterile work environment. You’ll also learn how to choose different types of plant media for your plant project, how to properly handle tissue culture plants, sterilize plant seeds and culture them in session, and take home a sterile plant tissue culture to watch grow and enjoy at home. Feel free to bring your own plant seed of choice for your take home plant tissue culture box!

Participants age 5+ must show proof of full vaccination (we recommend using the Excelsior Pass). Masks are required to be worn for the duration of the event when indoors, and if participants consent the Instructor may remove their mask for easier communication.
If you have had COVID-19 within the past 15 days, a negative PCR or rapid test is required before coming to Genspace. Please show Genspace staff your proof of negative test results. Given the rapidly changing circumstances surrounding the pandemic, please note that terms of this event are subject to change, and we will update you ASAP.

If you cancel after our 7-day policy, we cannot refund your ticket, but we can exchange and offer credits toward future classes. If you have signed up for Biohacker Boot Camp, we will automatically transfer your registration to the next month’s dates unless you tell us otherwise. For all other classes, we will provide a personalized discount code to apply the cost of your class to a future workshop of your choice.

Tina S. Lai (she/her) is the project lead for Genspace’s Open Plant Community Project, which aims to build low-cost, DIY plant incubators and express insulin in the liverwort plant, M. polymorpha. She received her M.S. in Bioinformatics from New York University Tandon School of Engineering, and her M.S. in Plant Biology from Penn State University.
