Registration is NOW OPEN!We are pleased to share that Oakland-based author Tommy Orange, citizen of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, will be coming to Denver, Colorado, on Wednesday, December 10th, to speak at History Colorado.
With his first book, There, There, Orange garnered a 2019 Pulitzer Prize nomination for a novel that, according to the MacArthur Foundation, “follows the lives of 12 Native characters as they make their way to the Big Oakland Powwow” in ways that “complicate and challenge familiar stereotypes about what it means to be Native American.” His second novel, Wandering Stars, was published in 2024 and is both a prequel and a sequel to There, There and opens with the experience of the Sand Creek Massacre and its immediate aftermath. Just this past month, October 2025, Orange was named a MacArthur Fellow and the impact of his books are described by the MacArthur Foundation as such:
In both of Orange’s novels, hope is subtle yet persistent. It is buried under the weight of history in his characters’ search for connection, meaning, and a way forward. Through sweeping storytelling married to an intimate focus on interiority, Orange illuminates the richness and depth of contemporary Native American life.
