About this Event
Tobacco Slave is a first-of-its-kind film exposing the plight of tobacco farmers in Malawi and letting them share, in their words, what a life of growing tobacco is really like.
Join University of Bath filmmakers Roy Maconachie, Professor of Natural Resources and Development, and Simon Wharf for a screening of this award-winning film.
Following the screening, we invite you to participate in a discussion that explores the practices of global tobacco companies and how they have a disturbing resemblance to colonial-era exploitation in Africa.
Chaired by Chrissie Giles, Deputy Editor (The Bureau of Investigative Journalism), the panel is made up of speakers including:
- Dr Pankhuri Agarwal, Research Associate (School of Management, University of Bath)
- Phil Chamberlain, Deputy Director (Tobacco Control Research Group, University of Bath)
- Prof. Roy Maconachie, Professor of Natural Resources and Development (Department of Social & Policy Sciences, University of Bath)
- Dr Lonjezo Masikini, Political Economist and Technical Advisor (IES-Congo)
- Simon Wharf, Film Production Specialist, (Marketing, Communications & External Affairs, University of Bath) Marketing & Brand
