About this Event

Visit 16 Nicholson Street gallery for the upcoming exhibition ‘To Stand in the Full Sun’, which presents a vibrant and large-scale installation exploring collaboration and play through abstract colour and form. Curated by Nell Cardozo, the exhibition and artwork is co-produced by artist Beth Shapeero with 16 Nicholson Street and participants from NGO Empower Women for Change who support women from diverse backgrounds including new Scots, ethnic minorities, refugees and asylum seekers.

The bold works on display reflect the dynamic women who created them throughout a series of workshops that utilised 16 Nicholson Street as a studio-space. Expansive screen prints celebrate confidence-building, risk-taking, friendship, intercultural exchange, and co-production across long-term processes through the lens of abstraction, colour and form. The result is an exciting, bright and immersive visitor experience.

This exhibition themes were developed in ‘Freedom in Abstraction, Power in Creativity’, a series of ten workshops over 8 months that were co-designed by 16 Nicholson Street, artist Beth Shapeero, and community partners Kaneez Fizza and Lababa Navqi from NGO Empower Women for Change (EWFC) to create a space for women from diverse backgrounds including new Scots, ethnic minorities, refugees and asylum seekers within Glasgow’s contemporary art community. By providing childcare, meals and the gallery as a studio-space, these workshops allowed women the time and space to explore new types of creativity, learn artistic processes and embrace risk in creating their own abstract artworks.

The exhibition is open weekends (Fri-Sun) July 8- July 24th, 12pm-6pm, and is free & open to all. Drop-in welcome, no registration required.
