It’s just 10 days to go till the next live music night at MJs on Thursday 20 November.
Come along and enjoy the music, the company, and of course the food and refreshments. Remember to book a table to guarantee a seat.

Open Mic - 7.00 pm to 9.00 and 9.45 pm to 10.30 pm
No prebooked slots so just turn up on the night to play. It’s 15 minute slots (including changeover time) for the open mic. Acts should plan on a maximum of 11/12 minutes playing/song introduction time, which will generally be 3 “normal length” songs or 2 longer songs. The more you chat the less time you’ve got for your songs.
Remember and let Phil or I know when you arrive that you wish to play.
As I keep reminding everyone, every month, we need to start sharp at 7.00 pm to fit in the full compliment of 11 open mic acts with 15 minute time slots. It is only fair that the early acts have a reasonable a crowd to play to, so the earlier everyone turns up the earlier we get started.
If we have more or fewer than 11 acts or can’t start sharp we will adjust the time slots accordingly and there may be either no slots (or fewer songs) available to late arrivals.
Graham (the drummer) Johnston will also have his electric kit in situ.
Phil and I have been considering for a while that we need to limit the number of electric acts during the open mic part of the night in an effort to minimise the amount of gear on stage and to speed up changeovers. We will review the number on a night by night basis as the featured act set up will influence the number of electric acts we can manage. We had decided that for this month that we would limit to 2 electric acts, in addition to the featured act, and to help with that the Neighbours would be playing acoustic this time. 2 electric acts have however already confirmed in the last few days that they will be coming, so there is no scope for any additional “electric acts” this month. We will keep this under review in the months ahead.
Featured Act – 9.00 pm to 9.45 pm
The featured act this month is Ron McLeod (and friends). This will be Ron’s debut as the featured act. Here is short bio:
Grounded in contemporary folk and blues, with a nod to country, rock and a smattering of jazz, Ron McLeod brings a personal touch to a wide range of acoustic and electric songs. While retaining influences from Scottish folk music, Ron draws on acoustic and electric material from artists ranging from Jimmy Reed and Chuck Berry, through Dylan, Little Feat and Nick Drake, to The Stones, the Beatles and Pink Floyd.
Ron debuted at MJs in 2024 and performed together with Dave Forsyth on the acoustic stage at this year’s Summer Fest. Ron will again be joined by Dave on guitar and harmonica, supported by the inimitable Ken Morton – fine guitar player, guitar technician and the leader of the excellent ‘Papa Mo’ band – on bass. His set for the 20th will involve a journey from the Delta Blues, through country and folk-rock, to straightforward rock ‘n’ roll.
