Tineke Postma has celebrated international success, for example in collaboration with American jazz luminaries Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding. The BIMHUIS composition assignment is a new adventure for the Frisian-born saxophonist. The soprano saxophone has a central role in her new music, which brings together varied elements: the sound of the electric jazz from the 1970s and 80s, rhythms from Indian music, and the M-Base philosophy of jazz innovator Steve Coleman. Paradoxes and dilemmas that emerged during the COVID-19 crisis turned out to be inevitable sources of inspiration.
For this assignment, Tineke Postma formed a remarkable band featuring Mexican rising star Fuensanta Méndez on double bass and vocals, in a surprising rhythm section with drummer Sun-Mi Hong and bass guitarist Jeroen Vierdag. Guitarist Miles Okazaki is a well-known contributor to the New York jazz scene, especially through his longstanding collaboration with the abovementioned Steve Coleman. In this setting, pianist Marc van Roon focuses on keyboards and Fender Rhodes. This is the second BIMHUIS composition assignment—the first one was awarded to Ben van Gelder in 2019.
